Adobe PhotoshopMini masterclass Select and Mask. The video and the written steps will explain how to use each tool in Select & Mask so you can fix any cutout problems. Eliminate smudgies (smudgies), blockies (smudgies), and halos.
You will often have problems with the edges when you select images to cut out. You’ll see halos, jaggies, blockies, smudgies and other problems. (I just coined the phrases Smudgies and blockies, you’ll know them when you see them.) Photoshop has a number tools that can help you fix these edge issues. Many people aren’t using all these tools because they often don’t know what each tool does. That’s my goal here, to explain these tools and demonstrate when to use them. I wanted to do a thorough walk-through of all the features in Select and Mask and its working. Here is Part 2, which deals with Smooth Edges. Part 1 is available here
This tutorial was created in Photoshop 2024. This tutorial will work with Photoshop CC or newer.
We will use an automobile because it has nice hard edges. This tutorial will be focusing on these types. Often I will use the Pen tool to get a very accurate selection on this kind of task if I’m going high resolution or print. Learn how to use the Photoshop Pen Tool.
To learn how to cut these objects out faster and easier, please follow the first 3 steps in this tutorial.
Select and mask can be used for all selections, regardless of what tool is used to make the selection.
Select the Quick Selection or Object Selection Tool
Select Subject in the top toolbar
Cloud offers a higher quality selection
Cloud offers the best quality but you must be connected to the Internet to use it. If you want to use the device, then do so.
Cloud is always available as a choice in the preferences.
Photoshop Settings>Image Processing>Select Subject Processing, choose Cloud.
You will see a list of options.
There is an extra bit at the back
Use Object Selection
Select the selection boundary you wish to remove and hold down Alt/Option.
Photoshop will remove the portion and snap it to the object.
Finish making the selection you need to. I have many tutorials for making selections. There are many ways to make them using the magic tools. I have tutorials and a course here. Photoshop Selection Secrets
If you used the steps above or a different selection tool, let’s refine the edges now.
Choose Select and Mask (If it doesn’t show, choose a selection tool for the toolbox on the left of Photoshop).
Select and Mask Workspace Tools
Let’s look at the tools on the left.
Refine Tool is used for soft and semi-transparent areas. We covered this in the first part of this tutorial
There is also the brush tool.
The brush tool allows us to paint anywhere we want without any algorithm working. It’s fully manual
By using the brush tool, we can add selected areas.
Hold down Alt/Option while removing areas. This tool allows us to manually select edges or areas that got overlooked.
In this case, the extra paint on the back is being removed. In Black and white, we can see the mask. This was covered in Part 1.
The object selection is the same Object Selection in Adobe Photoshop and uses ai for edge and object detection
When using the object selection feature in Select and Mask, we can easily add the car into the garage.
The Lasso tool uses a lasso to add or remove from the selection, Like the brush, but it’s selection based.
Make a selection, and the selected area will appear.
Hold Alt/Option while making a selection.
We don’t have to fill when using the lasso tool, it does it automatically.
When we use the Polygon Lasso, we can edit using straight lines. This is a useful option.
Using Global Refinements with Select and Mask
Let’s explore the global refinements. These tools are for use on surfaces with smooth edges, such as skin or hard surfaces.
Adjust smooth to smoothen bumpy edges
How Global Refinements Works
Let’s look at Photoshop for a second, so I can show you what’s happening with the Global Refinement tools. Don’t follow these steps, but just observe for a second. (You can see it in the video on top).
Here is the rough edge. We are looking directly at the mask. Here are Photoshop layer masks that beginners can use.
If we choose Filter>Blur, we can soften the edge of the mask,
The feather slider does exactly that.
The edge is soft and removed the bumps and unevenness, but we need to make it a sharp edge.
Choose Ctrl/Cmd+L to adjust the levels. (we are adjusting the mask, but viewing the image, so you can see the result, don’t worry, you don’t have to do this).
The edge will be sharpened as we pull the triangles closer together. This is the same thing as using the contrast slide in Select and Mask.
Before Select and Mask, we used blur and levels all the time.
Back to Select Mask
Add some feathers for a softer edge and to even it out.
Add contrast to make your edge sharper.
Another setting allows you to expand the edge or shrink it. This allows you to show more edge or reduce the fringes.
Move it right to expand and broaden the edge.
Move it to the right to expand the edge.
How Shift Edge works (demonstration, you don’t have to do this).
You can go back to the mask in Photoshop
Remember when we added the feather and then pulled together the triangle in Levels to sharpen this edge?
If we move the triangles to the right, the edge will be contracted.
Move all triangles to the right to expand the selection.
Shifting Edges for Select and Mask
Back to select Mask
When using Select and Mask to move the edges, be careful because it will affect the entire image.
Decontaminate colors can be useful because they can remove edge halos on their own.
Only after applying decontaminate colors. The Shift edge should be moved a minimum amount.
This is the quickest and easiest way to fix edges.
There are A number of ways are available to fix edges.I have made PhotoshopCAFE offers a variety of tutorials.. Here is another way. Photoshop: How to clean up the edges around selections
Choose New Layer with Layer Mask on “output”
Click OK to apply changes.
The layer opens with a mask in Photoshop.
If you paint the Layer mask black, you can remove the cutout.
You can add cutout areas by painting on the Layer Mask with a white paintbrush.
You can use brushes to make the cutout perfect.
There are a number of other tools and techniques that you can use to work with cut outs and edge in Photoshop. My course covers most of themYou can find many free tutorials at the CAFE
This 2-part tutorial should help you better understand the Select and Mask Tool in Photoshop.
